Set in beautiful Grumeti Singita Reserve in the backdrop of Serengeti plains, we recently had our two-day annual EarthRanger conference. In its 4th
edition, the conference is a meeting of the minds, bringing in leaders from various Protected Areas.
EarthRanger (ER) is a Protected Area (PA) management platform used for real-time visualization and analysis. It aggregates critical assets into a unified view in the operations center. So a PA manager is able to view ranger positions, collar data from animals, reports from rangers, vehicle trackers, camera traps, and more. With all this data the operations team is able to effectively deploy rangers and monitor the PA from a central ops room. What ER brings is the military level insights to non-military deployments. In summary, the key aspects of EarthRanger are:
- Protected area real time visualization platform
- It is the nerve center that connects various operations into a single unified unit
- ER started with security operations, but the ecological and community aspects are intertwined in Protected Area.
Over the two days, PA managers spoke at length on how ER is used in the operations room. Impact is measured when engineering work done in Seattle is influencing how rangers are able to do their job effectively in various parts of Africa. Every month 100s of snares are recovered. In part the ability of ER to provide heat map of snare reports enables PA managers to effectively predict presence of snares.
EarthRanger is one of the first products with sustainable Impact models from Vulcan. We rely on implementation partners like Wildlife Protection Solutions (WPS), Kinetic6, or African Parks Network to take the solution to market. Combined with partners like Microsoft Azure, who provide cloud credits for these PA implementations, we have a complete cloud service with enterprise grade SLA. This is compelling enough for the PA customers, since it provides value for the parks.
EarthRanger has certified IOT sensors (20 and growing list of sensors) to integrate with the platform. This makes deployment standardized for customers. On the reporting end, we provide APIs for 3rd
party integrations. One such integration is with SMART that provides historical access to data. It enables rangers to look at data over time. The goal for EarthRanger is to help improve response times on incidents, and over time to prevent incidents themselves.
